IMPACT OF LOCKDOWN ON MENTAL HEALTH

Everyone around the globe has experienced a drastic change in their lifestyle since the beginning of the most prolonged lockdown that this generation has experienced, starting from 23rd March,2020. It ensured that millions of people were confined to their home, only venturing out to stock up on essentials. This may have had a great impact on curbing the spread of the ongoing corona virus but it has also had a huge impact on the mental health of several individuals.
Our time under lockdown has been mentally tough on us, but we don’t talk about it enough. The isolation and fear in this lockdown era is driving an escalating nervousness among many people and not just in those with pre-existing conditions like anxiety, depression and OCD . There is an impact on the youth, children and elderly alike, who are going into depression due to loneliness and stress. This pandemic is also having a psychological impact on a huge part of the young population due to increasing unemployement. Students and teachers are finding it difficult to get accustomed to the methods of online studies. It has been found that children staying at home due to lockdown spend more time in front of TV and internet which can lead to psycho-social problems, like lower self-esteem. Excess use of the internet can lead to internet addiction disorder. Some can also experience cyberbullying which can affect their mental health. Many people are also feeling over burdened and stressed as they’re doing all the household chores without any help.
A smart way in which we can take care of our mental health is by making and maintaining a daily routine. It's also good to restrict social media usage to prevent it from becoming too overwhelming. One should only obtain information from credible news sources. To help lift up our mood, we can find things to keep us busy, like meditation. Spending some time visualising a better tomorrow, and future will help you to positively reinforce yourself, and keep peace and positive energy flowing through you and through others around you at home. Keeping in touch with our friends and family can also help in coping with mental health issues. Knowing that everyone is in the same boat, and facing the same situation can help reinstate the fact that you are not completely alone and you’re not going through this pandemic by yourself. Also, the best thing to do when you can’t get a hold over your feelings, emotions, or thoughts is to reach out and ask for help!
